Even with the market flooded with the “Big Eyes” masks a ground swell seems to be building for “low profile” dive masks. Formerly the low volume mask was the tool of the free-diver but the aspects that make it appealing to apnea divers are the same ones that are beginning to attract their tank hauling counterparts.

Low Volume Mask

The exceptional low volume makes the mask an ease to clear with barely a whisp of breath, an increasingly important thing in a world where breathing gas conservation is king. The decreased volume also brings the mask lenses much closer to the wearers eyes thus increasing the divers field of vision. This reinforces the idea that you don’t need a wide window if you’ve got your nose against it.

Most free-dive masks are made of softer grade silicone blends that enable them to be comfortable even when compressed at depth. As a result these masks tend to be able to form a comfortable seal on a wide range of faces.
With all of this going for the lowly free-dive mask what can still be said about the big eyed behemoth weighing down your dive bag? I guess it makes your eyes look fantastic?

South Tampa Scuba dove the Vandenburg this summer. Myself and Shea Vosler went on 3 dives in late August, going to depths of 100 feet, and exploring over five floors of the ship, inside and out. It was a very cool experience, although there is few plant and animal life due to the short time the Vandenburg has been at the bottom. I expect that to change very quickly in the coming months. Unfortunatly the visibility was poor due to the weather, but hopefully on the next trip the visibility will be on our side, and we will have some video.
